Speech-Language Pathologist

Hettie Johnson has been a speech-language pathologist since 1970 and has specialized in dyslexia since 2001. She is in private practice in Hoover. She received her bachelor’s in 1970 from Auburn University, her master’s from the University of Montevallo in 1972, and did traineeships at Duke University and the Bham VA Hospital. She has taught in universities, graduate school, elementary school, hospitals, nursing homes, and home health.
She published “Teaching Chaining to Unintelligible Children” in Language, Speech and Hearing Services in Schools. She has presented at conferences around the U.S. and in England. She has held offices of the Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama, the International Dyslexia Association of Alabama, and co-founded the Dyslexia Education Group of Central Alabama. She was part of the Dyslexia Friends group that helped write the Dyslexia Amendments to the Alabama Administrative Code in 2015 and the Dyslexia Resource Guide which is on the ALSDE website.
Hettie serves on the Board of Spring Valley School and is happy to serve with the Hettie Johnson Institute of Spring Valley School.
She and her husband Bill have two children and five grandchildren.
