SVS Welcomes First Full-Time Development Director

Spring Valley School (SVS) is honored to announce that a full-time Development Director will be joining its Department of Mission Advancement beginning in May of 2023.

Spring Valley School (Birmingham, AL) exists to provide excellence in education for bright students with specific language-based and mathematics-based learning differences including Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia. The Department of Mission Advancement was established with the purpose of connecting the members of the immediate SVS school community, and the community at-large, with opportunities to engage with the school's vital mission of making futures bright for students with learning differences. The Director of Development will be integral to the leadership and execution of fundraising and constituent relations programs designed to advance the mission of the school.

Introducing SVS Director of Development, Andrea Martin:

Andrea Martin has spent 30 years cultivating friends and raising funds for two institutions in Birmingham – UAB and Children’s of Alabama.

She was the Director of Alumni Affairs for UAB in the early 90’s, responsible for leading a team to manage all alumni programs for the University, including, management of the UAB National Alumni Society’s Board of Directors. When UAB conducted their first ever major comprehensive campaign, she was promoted as senior director of development for two schools on UAB’s academic side – the School of Health Professions and the School of Dentistry where she raised over ten million dollars in five years for endowments and capital projects.

Andrea was recruited to Children’s of Alabama in 2003 where she continued to serve for 16 years. While at Children’s, she had the opportunity to build an annual fund program, a major gifts program, solidify the planned giving program at Children’s and perhaps one of the pinnacles of her career was to serve as the campaign manager, raising over $100 million in a little over two years, to construct the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children.

In 2019, Andrea returned to UAB once again this time as Senior Director of Development for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Her areas of responsibilities included Genetics, Precision Medicine, Pediatrics, Neurobiology, and the Civitan International Research Center. She also helped to liaise with UAB’s annual giving program to ensure Medicine was properly represented in all annual fund mailings and programs.

Andrea received a B.A. in English from Samford University.

Please join the SVS Family in giving Andrea a warm welcome!
