Graduation 2026: Voices of Gratitude and Growth
Spring Valley School recently celebrated a milestone evening filled with gratitude, reflection, and hope as the Class of 2026 crossed the stage and officially became graduates. The ceremony was a powerful reminder of what makes Spring Valley School such a special community: every student is known, supported, challenged, and celebrated for exactly who they are.
This year’s commencement featured heartfelt speeches from graduates who reflected on their personal journeys, the teachers and families who shaped them, and the friendships that carried them through their years at Spring Valley.
The evening also included an inspiring commencement address from Jake Sussman, founder of Superpower Mentors. Sussman encouraged graduates to embrace their strengths, advocate for themselves, and recognize the value of thinking differently — a message that deeply resonated with the Spring Valley community. His words reinforced the very mission that has guided these students throughout their educational journeys.

The ceremony opened with remarks from graduate Walter Anderson, who spoke about the confidence and self-discovery he found at Spring Valley.
“I have felt more supported here than anywhere else. I’ve been allowed to form my own ideas and find my voice that helps me define who I want to be going forward.”
Walter also expressed gratitude to his teachers, family, and the community that helped shape his future, setting the tone for an evening centered on appreciation and growth.

Many students reflected on how Spring Valley transformed their educational experiences and gave them a place where they could thrive. Sean Annegan shared how the school taught him that mistakes are part of learning and growth.
“It made me realize that it is okay to make mistakes.”
Miller Backus spoke honestly about the challenges he faced before coming to Spring Valley and how finding the right environment changed everything.
“It was the right choice to come to SVS. I got a better change of scenery, I was able to excel in classes, the classrooms here are smaller, there is a smaller community, easier access to the help I needed, exceptionally good teachers, and great classmates.”
James Colvin reflected on the way Spring Valley helped shape the person he has become.
“Spring Valley showed me the person I want to be, and over the years Spring Valley has helped me become that person.”
He also celebrated his next chapter at Auburn University with an enthusiastic “War Eagle!”
Throughout the ceremony, graduates repeatedly returned to themes of belonging and connection. Ella Giffin thanked the teachers and mentors who supported her growth, while Clay Key reflected on the relationships that helped him through difficult moments during his 11 years at the school.
Park Madden encouraged younger students to embrace opportunities that challenge them.
“Jump at every opportunity you get to challenge yourself, it will only help.”

Mary Elizabeth Plaia described Spring Valley as “home,” while celebrating the teachers and friendships that made school feel like family.
Several graduates highlighted how Spring Valley’s supportive environment helped them discover confidence, passions, and future goals. Cecilia Reddington shared excitement about attending Samford University to major in history, while Luci Smith reflected on overcoming shyness and preparing for college through dual enrollment opportunities before heading to University of Montevallo.

Camden Schubert reflected on the emotional complexity of growing up and the friendships that helped ground him throughout his time at Spring Valley. He closed by sharing his excitement to pursue the arts and create something meaningful and personal.
Preston Stover delivered a heartfelt and humorous reflection on his experience at Spring Valley, speaking openly about his journey with ADHD and ASD and how the school supported his growth. He thanked teachers, staff, and friends who helped him grow academically and personally, emphasizing gratitude for the support that shaped his time at SVS.
Ella Watkins captured the spirit of the evening as she thanked classmates, teachers, staff members, and family members who helped shape her journey. Again and again, graduates recognized the educators who believed in them, pushed them, listened to them, and celebrated them.
As the Class of 2026 moves on to universities, careers, certifications, creative pursuits, and new adventures, they leave behind a legacy of resilience, authenticity, creativity, and community.

Congratulations to the graduates of Spring Valley School. Your voices, stories, and journeys remind us all that there is strength in individuality, power in perseverance, and possibility in every path forward.
