Laura Griffin
Laura Griffin is the Dean of Faculty and Academics at Spring Valley School, where she brings over 20 years of experience in teaching and tutoring mathematics, particularly for students with dyscalculia and dyslexia. She holds an undergraduate degree in Mathematics with a minor in Education, as well as a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics, both from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
In her role, Laura oversees all matters related to Chromebooks and is passionate about supporting students who struggle with math. She has developed a successful math intervention program that helps students enhance their mathematical abilities, emphasizing that many students simply need extra support to succeed. Laura believes that students with learning differences often exhibit remarkable creativity and problem-solving skills because they learn in unique ways.
She values the transformative moment when students who feel defeated in school begin to thrive and enjoy learning, realizing their potential. In the classroom, Laura encourages a positive attitude and persistence, asserting that as long as students are willing to keep trying, she will find effective teaching methods to help them grasp the content.
Laura also advocates for the understanding that having a learning difference does not equate to a lack of intelligence. She challenges the myth that students with dyscalculia cannot learn math, stressing that with multi-sensory and explicit instruction, they can indeed succeed in mathematics. She is dedicated to providing support throughout high school, ensuring students are well-prepared for college or careers.
In her personal time, Laura enjoys spending moments with her grandchildren and crocheting.
