In addition to his teaching role, he served as the Director of Security and Facilities from 2018 to 2024. His extensive background includes freelance illustration and graphic design, serving as a Senior Exhibits Fabricator and Prototyper at the McWane Science Center, and as a Master Scenic Artist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Town and Gown Theatre. He has also contributed to anthropological research and illustrated works for his wife, who is an anthropologist.
James has received numerous awards for his dedication to education, including the National Society of High School Scholars STEAM Educator Grant and the Helen Keller Legacy Award for his commitment to combating blindness. He actively participates in extracurricular activities, assisting with the Garage Band Club and leading the Mad Scientists’ Club at Spring Valley.
Passionate about fostering understanding in his students, James finds joy in witnessing the "eureka moment" when a student grasps a challenging concept. He employs creative teaching methods, such as unique test review games and hands-on projects, to engage his students effectively. Advocating for the recognition that dyslexia and other learning differences do not define intelligence, James emphasizes that with explicit instruction and support, students can flourish and succeed.
James’s rich experiences, including living among descendants of cultures that practiced cannibalism, enhance his perspective on education and cultural diversity. He is dedicated to providing transformative instruction that instills discipline, individual attention, and love, empowering students to grow, learn, and succeed in their educational journeys
