George Evans
George Evans is an Upper School English teacher with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. With a decade of teaching experience, he has also worked as a copywriter and currently writes articles for his Substack, Fourth Castle.
At Spring Valley School, George is dedicated to uncovering the hidden genius within each student. He believes in challenging students to excel in areas where they can succeed while accommodating their individual weaknesses. His teaching philosophy is rooted in the understanding that every learning difference presents unique strengths and opportunities.
Outside of the classroom, George enjoys reading, writing, playing video games, and working out. He often engages students in thought-provoking activities, such as role-playing as state censors in a game called "The Torch Committee," where they decide whether to censor controversial books.
George advocates for a nuanced understanding of learning differences, emphasizing that dyslexia affects decoding words rather than overall language ability. He strives to create an environment where all students feel valued and challenged, rejecting the notion that having a learning disability is a simple or easy experience. His goal is to foster a classroom culture that celebrates diverse minds and recognizes the value of different perspectives.
