Elizabeth Smith
Elizabeth Smith is a 5th Grade Math and Science Teacher, Drama Director, and Head of the House System at Spring Valley School. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Auburn University, a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of West Alabama, and an Educational Specialist (EdS) certification in Teaching Leadership from West Alabama. While she has experience substituting in Vestavia, her full-time role has been at Spring Valley.
Elizabeth graduated summa cum laude from both Auburn University and the University of West Alabama. Her involvement in drama and the house system enriches the vibrant community at Spring Valley. In her free time, she enjoys art, hiking, gardening, reading, and spending time with her dog.
One of the most rewarding aspects of her work is mentoring children who think similarly to her. She takes great pride in making her students feel valued, heard, supported, and loved within her classroom. Elizabeth strives to be the educator she needed during her own public school experience, demonstrating that adults with neurodivergent brains can also be successful.
In her teaching, she emphasizes hands-on learning and technology aids to assist in abstract knowledge acquisition. She focuses on topics such as the Properties of Matter, Changes in Matter, and Space. Elizabeth believes it’s essential for people to understand that students' behaviors often stem from a lack of confidence, skills, or support. When neurodivergent students encounter roadblocks, it can feel overwhelming, but she emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for them to navigate these challenges. She asserts that neurodivergent students are often just as hardworking and intelligent as their neurotypical peers; they simply process information differently.
