Our Approach to Education
Spring Valley School provides a multi-sensory, whole-child approach to education in a nurturing and traditional school setting. Its curriculum incorporates creative strategies and state-of-the-art assistive technology based on proven educational research, enabling students to achieve their maximum potential in and out of the classroom. In addition, Spring Valley prepares its students for the future by focusing on the development of self-advocacy as well as the individual skills and talents of its diverse student population. The emphasis is placed on what each student is and what he/she can do rather than what he/she is not and what he/she cannot do. We balance remediation with a rich and stimulating curriculum that identifies and nurtures our students' gifts and talents. Spring Valley School’s program consists of three essential components: remedial, core, and enrichment classes.

Remedial Classes
Placement in reading and math will be based on each student’s Personal Educational Plan.
Reading
Students requiring remediation in reading will receive a multi-sensory structured language approach based on the Orton-Gillingham method. Weakness in phonological processing will be addressed as needed. Students that have mastered decoding skills will receive a literature-based reading program stressing comprehension skills.
Mathematics
All students will receive a multisensory approach appropriate for their skill and grade level.

Core Classes
The content of these classes reflects the state curriculum guidelines; however, the teaching approach is unique. Spring Valley School emphasizes an experiential, hands-on approach. In addition, a by-pass approach is incorporated based on each student’s Personal Educational Plan. By-pass strategies might include technology such as books on tape, spell checkers, and pedagogical strategies such as oral testing. Study skills will be taught in the context of Language Arts, History, and Science.
